Our first glimpse of the Swiss Alps.
A drive from Germany to Switzerland should only ever occur in Autumn. The scenery was exceptional. Changing leaves do something to a person, I think. Especially when done at such a magnitude as the wonderland of forests edging this motorway. What a peaceful, bewitching road trip.
We were even lucky when there was a break in the tree line, because we got to see something just as lovely- Lake Constance.
Unfortunately the photos from this rest stop just don't do it justice. From the time we first glimpsed Lake Constance, until we made it to this edge of the giant lake, dusk was just starting to fall. Over the drive we got to watch the transformation of the sky on the water. This world is simply beautiful.
Due to our awe-filled pit stop we didn't end up making it to Zurich until well after dark. Our hotel was on the outskirts of the city, so we immediately put our bags down and wandered onto the world's most expensive underground into the city center. WOW Zurich. Although many of the shops had closed for the day we still gaped at the window displays for stores even more impressive than the brands you might find at Harrod's [and that's saying something]. I have never seen so much wealth in one location. My father and I wandered into a hotel at one point to ask for directions and ohmyword I have never felt more out of place!! Beautiful chandeliers as big as a small house, a pianist in a tux, fur on every woman's shoulders... our driving-clothes turned many a head and upward nose! We had some trouble finding a viable option for food but we finally chanced upon a quaint little Greek restaurant hidden down a sleepy alley. One word: HALLOUMI. Oh my tastebuds have missed Greek cuisine!!
The next day we did some sight seeing around Lake Zurich and tried, in vain, to find Ferrero Rocher's headquarters. There were plenty of other chocolate shops to keep us happy and full, though. Dad loved the 'mini hamburgers' [macaroons].
Beautiful Lake Zurich, just as the morning fog was rolling out the swans rolled in.
A local 'garage sale' market outside of a false Ferrero Rocher building. I had to physically restrain myself from purchasing the skeleton. Might have been a bit hard to explain in my carry-on.
These poor little boys were not ready for the swan/duck onslaught after throwing a few crumbs of bread crust through the fence.
What an incredible way to spend a morning. I wish Atlanta had closer lakes, and more scenic ones than Lake Lanier.
