Jonny is stationed in Portsmouth, which is wayyy down at the very bottom of England.
I took the 4+ hour journey from train --> tube --> train again to see this seaside town.
{See? I'm up near Manchester, if that gives you some perspective.}
I know I've mentioned this every time it's come up [or every time I can find an opportunity to insert it into conversation] but I. LOVE. OCEAN. I don't care which ocean; I don't carehow cold or how dirty the beach or how over- or under-crowded... I just love being near the sea. Portsmouth had it peeping from absolutely everywhere and I was a very happy girl.
Currently Jonny is living on the big Navy base down there instead of the Marines base, so we spent a lot of time wandering around it, learning some quality naval history. I think that if I was in the armed forces I would be in the Navy. Not only do their uniforms remind me of Pop-Eye [BONUS- ask anyone] but then I could be surrounded by the sea at all times. I'm also infatuated with ships. So, it'd be an obvious choice... if only I had the kahunas for it!
{I love old signs like this... this one in particular reminded me of my university's off-campus book store, Engineer's.}
Oldest dock in the UK.
I'm glad Jonny got to be a tourist with me in his new town. I think that you can see so many new things when you're trying to show someone else around. I'm looking forward to showing him my Atlanta next week. It's such a wonderful excuse to do all of the touristy things I still have yet to do in my 20-odd years as a resident!
